Spinal Surgery Facts:

If 10 percent of the patients who have an initial laminectomy operation require a subsequent operation the effect of the post-operative scar tissue on that percentage of patients is significant.

Failure rates for spinal surgery have not changed in the past several decades.

Spinal surgery rates have increased in that time over 5 times. (Chin-wern Chan, 2011)

  • Lumbar laminectomy surgery  most common operation in the United States
  • 3 million procedures performed worldwide with over one third in the US;
  • Direct cost in the USA of low back pain estimiated between 12.2 and 90.6 billion U.S. dollars annually
  • Fourth most expensive condition for employers in the United States.
  • In the United States, back problems were one of the top ten most expensive medical conditions treated in 2005, accounting for $32 billion for visits to doctors’ offices, clinics, emergency departments, hospital stays, home health care, and prescription medicines (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2008). (Nagy Mekhail, 2011)
  •  Among other chronic pain conditions, the indirect costs of back pain were estimated to be 19.8 billion U.S. dollars, higher than arthritis and other pain conditions (Chin-wern Chan, 2011)

Growth rates for spine surgery are fueled by ageing population, obesity, rising awareness and increasing incomes in developing markets. Asia-Pacific will see a 9% CAGR.

Despite advances in technology and surgical techniques, the rates of FBSS are similar to several decades ago. (Chin-wern Chan, 2011)
