5 Tips to Lighten Your Period Flow

  • By: Samantha Denäe

If you’re struggling with Endometriosis, fibroids, or any other reproductive disease it seems as if having a heavy blood flow during your period will never change. No matter what you try like different contraceptives, Lupron, or progesterone creams to balance the hormones, nothing helps. The bleeding seems to grow heavier and heavier as the months go by and the pain intensifies as well. In my journey of healing, I’ve discovered ways to help lighten your period flow. Below are five tips:

  • Key Limes: Not limes, KEY LIMES. Key limes help to reduce inflammation, is a good source of magnesium, and help with digestion. If you juice 2 key limes into a shot glass or cup every morning and drink on an empty stomach, it will not only help to lighten your period flow, but it will also give you lots of energy to jump start your day.
  • Organic Pads/Tampons: Sanitary products we usually see on shelves like Kotex, Always, Maxi contain harmful chemicals like fragrances, pesticide residues, dioxins and furans. These chemicals can cause diseases like cervical cancer, miscarriages, and Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), which can be fatal if not detected early enough. Those chemicals can also cause heavy bleeding and make your period pain worsen. Organic sanitary products are becoming more widespread as they are free of harmful chemicals and are lighter on the body.
  • Blackstrap Molasses: the molasses that remains after the removal of sugar helps to reduce the chance of estrogen dominance, which is a common cause of heavy periods. Blackstrap molasses provides a great source of iron, which is needed to replenish red blood cells, and magnesium, which supports the healthy excretion of estrogen.
  • Avoid dairy: I know that we all love dairy, especially cheese, but honestly it’s not healthy for us. Dairy contains A1 casein (proteins in cow’s milk) and in some cases, A1 casein turns into inflammatory peptide casomorphin (BCM7). This stimulates inflammatory cytokines, mast cells, and histamine which leads to heavy period pain and bleeding.
  • Vaginal/Yoni steaming: an age-old natural herbal remedy that detoxes the reproductive system. Steaming consists of blending together herbs into hot water. The herbs, at its most potent, will help regulate menstruation, and can ease period cramps.

If you suffer from heavy bleeding during your period, try these tips and see if in a few months’ time it’s helped your flow. Happy bleeding!
